About Kulbhushan Kharbanda
Proudly known for his role as “Shakal”, the bald villain inspired by James Bond’s Blofeld, Kulbhushan Kharbanda is the epitome of versatility in the Bollywood industry.
Even after being born in the Attock district of Punjab (now Pakistan), his family moved to India, where he also completed his schooling in Jodhpur, Dehradun, and Aligarh. And just after graduating from Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College, he along with some of his friends formed a theater group called “Abhiyan”.
He also collaborated with Michael Joy’s “Yatrik”, a bilingual theatre, thereby emerging as its first paid performer. He also moved to Kolkata in 1972 to work under director Shyamanand Jalan and to join the “Padatik” theater group. He also ventured into the film industry for the first time through Sai Paranjpe’s “Jaadu Ka Shankh”, but first noticed in Shyam Benegal’s “Nishant” in 1974.
He acted in Benegal’s “Manthan”, “Bhumika”, “Junoon” and “Kalyug”. On a larger scale, he has also worked in parallel films such as “Godhuli” in 1977. Even in 1980, however, he was presented with the role of the infamous “Shakal” in Ramesh Sippy’s “Shaan”, which would also help him gain a foothold in mainstream Bollywood films.
