Immigration to Canada

Canada’s position as a top immigration destination for people worldwide is further cemented by its placing of fourth in the 2024 U.S. News Country Rankings.

Canada welcomes almost 500,000 new immigrants annually, making it one of the countries with the greatest immigration rates per population in the world. Its high scores also contribute to the reason why so many people decide to come here and start new lives. Over 8 million immigrants filed for permanent residence in Canada as of 2023, making up around 20% of the country’s entire population.

The new study permit regulations in Canada: What you should know

canada study visa

The government of Canada has recently declared its intention to lower the amount of temporary residents, which encompasses foreign workers and international students.

A further 10% cut from the 2024 target of 485,000 study permits to a new low of 437,000 study permits for 2025 has been announced by the Canadian government, which will negatively affect Indian students hoping to study in Canada. International students’ study visas reached a peak of 500,000 in 2023.

Since Indian students make up about 40% of all international students studying in Canada, this limitation will significantly affect them. According to the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), the number of Indian immigrants to Canada increased by 326% between 2013 and 2023, from 32,828 to 139,715.

Throughout the last 20 years, the number of Indian students enrolled in Canadian universities has increased by more than 5,800%, from 2,181 in 2000 to 128,928 in 2021.  About 427,000 Indian students are enrolled at universities abroad, out of approximately 13.35 lakh total, according to figures recently given by the Indian government.

Rapper from Toronto released after first-degree murder charge stayed

murder charge

Following the Crown’s decision to stay the prosecution, a Toronto rapper who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 20-year-old man was released on Monday.

Hassan Ali, better known as the rapper Top 5, was accused of being involved in the death of accounting student Hashim Omar Hashi.

Ali was taken into custody and charged in Windsor, Ontario, approximately two weeks following the shooting. He would go on trial after spending almost three years in jail until the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued the stay on Monday.

After the judge ruled that Ali’s social media posts and videos could not be used as evidence in his trial, the Crown withdrew its prosecution. The Crown’s theory said that Ali was a member of a rival gang that was active in the same area where Hashi was shot. The homicide, according to the Crown, was caused by gang rivalry.
