Sandeep Singh is an Indian field hockey player who has served as the captain of the Indian national team. He is mainly known as the penalty corner specialist in the team. Presently he is DSP in Haryana Police. It belongs to the Bhinder Sikh community in Haryana and is also originally a part of Shahabad Markanda.
He was born in Kurukshetra, a small town in Haryana. His parents are Daljit Kaur Saini and Gurcharan Singh Saini. His brother Bikramjit Singh is also a hockey player and is also a part of Indian Oil.
He started his career in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which was held in Kuala Lumpur. He also became the captain of the Indian hockey team in 2009. He is also very famous for his drag-flicker technique. He is also considered to have the best speed in the world for his unique skill of drag-flicker technique which is 145 km/h. Under his captaincy, we won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2009. We beat Malaysia in Ipoh. Thirteen years later a huge victory was also achieved and Singh was the top goal scorer in the entire tournament.
The India men’s national field hockey team was also selected for the 2012 Summer Olympics which were held in London. The team had achieved that position even after a long wait of eight years. The team won the final round by defeating France by a score of 8-1. Singh scored five goals in the final, all from penalty corners. He also achieved the title of the highest goalscorer in the entire tournament with 16 goals.
He was also the fifth highest paid player at the time of the inaugural Hockey India League. The Mumbai franchise took him for US$64,400. The team was named Mumbai Magicians. He again excelled throughout the tournament and was awarded as the top scorer with 11 goals in 12 games. In 2014 too, Punjab Warriors signed Singh.
